What is the number one thing people need more of to accomplish their dreams? Time!
One of the biggest time-suckers in my life is clutter!
I was going to quick make the kids a snack the other day, then take the rest of the hour–before picking up another kid–to work on my career goals. But it took the entire hour to make the “quick snack”, and this happened because of the mess and clutter everywhere. It took me longer to find what I needed, and I had to spend some time cleaning dishes before I could cook and serve the food.
If there weren’t so much junk in my space, and if I had a routine in place for cleaning, then those things would not be interfering with my personal career goals.
So … now I have set my goals aside briefly in the name of decluttering! To aide me in freeing up space—which is also freeing up time, I’ve used the following helpful resources that I’m sharing with you now;
Several sources include a common tip; PURGE!
The first video from Clutterbug.me is straightforward with 3 simple tips;
- Create a short cleaning routine and do it EVERY DAY no matter what.
- PURGE!
- Organize your space.
In the next video, the Sunday Stylist goes into depth with these 10 tips:
- HAVE LESS STUFF; Purge everything from your life that doesn’t add value.
- HAVE A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING.
- DO LESS MORE OFTEN; so nothing ever builds up into a big mess.
- DAILY CLEANING ROUTINES; Dishes, Counters, and Floors each evening.
- CLEAN AS YOU GO; Dishes straight into dishwasher, garbage directly to the trash bin.
- DON’T PUT IT DOWN, PUT IT AWAY; Consider collecting mess in open bins and baskets for each room, and take 5 minutes a day putting these things away.
- KEEP IT SIMPLE. (Tips #1 & 2 expanded)
- MAKE IT FUN; Try changing your mindset, to make cleaning something you want to do.
- DO IT TIL IT’S DONE; have it ready for the next time.
- DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT; keep it basic to finish it in the time you have, rather than spending hours on every detail.
The Sunday Stylist also expands into 13 reasons for the mess:
- Too much stuff
- Structure, strategy and schedules
- Life of Distractions
- Stop flying solo
- Stop wasting money (on things you don’t need that add to the clutter)
- No one cares (Stop trying to impress others, and focus on what you really need)
- Prioritize your health
- “All too hard” (Break it down into easy to handle pieces!)
- “Everything at once” (Doing small tasks you can complete more quickly can release a hormone in your body that makes you happy)
- “Works for one” (Find what works for you, which may not be one size fits all)
- “There’s always tomorrow” (DO what you can do TODAY!)
- Own worst critic (Stop engaging in negative self-talk)
- Excuse for everything (If you are willing to put the effort in, you can find away to overcome your obstacles)
The section on distraction from this last video gave me a different perspective on my career approach. I’m working towards monetizing my skills, but I’ve spread my goals thin between multiple subjects. This video may be what it takes to help me hone my focus and take the next step in my career. Here’s to working on one thing at a time!
